Rheum (Mother Tincture)
Common Name: Rheum officinale, R. palatum, Rhabarbarum, Rhubarb
Causes & Symptoms for Rheum
- Rheum Officinale is useful in diarrhea. Before stool there is unsuccessful urging to urinate. Stools smell sour, pasty with shivering and tenesmus and severe burning in the anus is felt.
- It is also useful for sour diarrhea during dentition.
- There is colicky pain with ineffectual urge to evacuate stools.
- Rheum Officinale also helps in offensive breath.
- There is difficulty in teething in children with restlessness and irritability and the whole child smells sour.
Head
Throbbing in head, sometimes proceeding from abdomen is relieved by Rheum.
Sweat on forehead and scalp after slight effort.
Ears
Rheum is useful in Otalgia with itching in ear.
Rheum is also useful in Crackling and bubbling in ear and in muscles on side of neck (Meniere’s disease).
Teeth
Rheum relieves Digging pains in teeth which are carious.
Painful sensation of coldness in teeth (with accumulation of much saliva).
Rheum is indicated in difficult dentition of children.
Stomach
Rheum is indicated in Nausea, as if proceeding from stomach, with colic.
Fullness in stomach, with pressure, as if overloaded.
It relieves Shootings and throbbings in pit of stomach.
Abdomen
Rheum relieves Cuttings in abdomen, which force a curving of the body, often shortly after a meal, worse by standing, worse from eating.
Colic: worse at once by uncovering an arm or leg, not better by stool, before and during stool, better after, with very sour stools in acid children.
Stool and Anus
There is Urgent and frequent want to evacuate, without any result, worse by movement, and walking.
Rheum is useful in complaints of Loose evacuations, generally of a sour smell, liquid, or of the consistence of pap, preceded and followed by tenesmus, with constrictive pinching in abdomen, and shuddering during the evacuation.
Greyish or brown diarrhoea, mixed with mucus, followed by tenesmus, pain in back, and great burning in anus and rectum.
Profuse diarrhoea, with vomiting, and great weakness is helped by Rheum.
Female Sexual Organs
Bearing down in uterine region while standing.
Rheum is useful in Drawing burning in left ovarian region.
Rheum is indicated in Urinary complaints after abortion.
Milk yellow, bitter indicates Rheum.
It relieves Stitches in nipples.
Respiratory Organs
Cough: dry in evening, with expectoration of mucus.
Snoring inspiration during sleep can be checked by Rheum.
Back
Rheum is useful in Violent cutting, as if in lumbar vertebra, worse from stool.
Tension in back and small of back.
Rigidity in loins and hips, which does not permit standing upright.
Upper Limbs
Lancinations in arms.
Rheum relieves tearing in arms, forearms, and joints of fingers.
Jerking in arms and hands is relieved by it.
Muscular palpitation (bubbling sensation) in joints of elbows.
Veins (on hands) swollen, and hands hot.
Lower Limbs
There is Great lassitude in thighs.
Rheum is useful in Shootings in knees and legs.
Bubbling sensation from bend of knee to heel.
Stiffness in bend of knees with pain on motion is relieved by it.
Generalities
Before or during stool there are colicky pains about umbilicus, straining before stool, which is finally voided with ease, infants who cry a great deal with colic in the night, tenesmus without stool.
Affections of left side of body.
Perspiration on upper part of body.
Rheum relieves Soreness of the joints during movement.
Rheum is useful in Palpitation in muscles, especially round joints.
Numbness of the limbs upon which patient has been lying.
Rheum is useful in Lassitude and heaviness in whole body as after waking from deep sleep.
Side effects of Rheum
There are no such side effects. But every medicine should be taken following the rules as given.
It is safe to take the medicine even if you are on other mode of medication like allopathy medicines, ayurvedic etc.
Homeopathic medicines never interfere with the action of other medicines.
Dosage and rules while taking Rheum
Take 10 drops in half cup of water three times a day.

Precautions while taking Rheum
Always keep a gap of 15 minutes before or after meals when you take medicine.
If pregnant or breastfeeding, ask a homeopathic practitioner before use.
Avoid eating tobacco or drinking alcohol during the course of medication.
